I just realized that sims 3 on steam is not compatible with mac is there anything I can do to fix this. Or did i basically just spend 20 dollars for a game I can't play. The Version of Sims 3 on Steam is Windows PC only. However, you should be able to activate the Serial Numbers provided by Steam on Origin and then play it through Origin on your Mac.
This is forum is origin not steam and they dont mix. From what I heard steam does not sell the Mac version but double check with steam. You may be able to transfer your steam to origin but you would have to contact EA directly for that if in the event you need to contact CS 1.

If you already have Origin on your Mac but are having problems with downloading or installing games, delete the client and download a new copy (this sometimes fixes issues with downloading). The latest version can be downloaded from here: Additional advice on how to download games (thank you Tremayne for this tip): When downloading from Origin, do NOT use the first install icon. Move your cursor over the game cover and click on the information (letter i) and then click on the install button from there.
For some reason, downloads from Origin frequently become corrupted.
Just a lament post. I've been trying to install The Sims 3 and the extensions I have (most of them) on my mac, but it keeps throwing the Unknown Error in my face. So far I've managed to install (and patch / run) The Sims 3, The Sims 3: World Adventures, The Sims 3: High-End Loft Stuff but when I tried installing Ambitions the launcher wouldn't open and I got the Unknown Error. I really wish EA would fix this but I can just picture them laughing their moneyhats off their head at the very notion of supporting Sims 3 now that Sims 4 is out.
I'm a sad simmer:(. My story so far. I won't go into the details of how horribly annoying it is to actually get the CD keys from Steam to input into Origin. I couldn't copy them from Steam on my mac and had to set up Steam on a Win PC to get to the CD keys from there. Then I had to paste them into the sims 3 website to activate my copies on Origin. After that I just set Origin to download the game and all the extensions in one go over night.
No problem there I guess. Then I installed the base game and just installed the expansions all at once. Of course that didn't work, after having installed something like 20 GBs of the sims to my mac I got the Unknown Error when I tried to open the launcher and never got anywhere. I tried the Uninstaller but of course that didn't work and just hung forever so I found a guide to manually delete the games and all the little nibbly bits and hidden files from my mac. Then I had to download everything again, yay.
Installed the base game, patched it, opened and did everything except actually start playing it. Then the first expansion, World Adventures, patch and open, all but play the game, repeat for High End Loft Stuff and so far so good. Then after installing Ambitions and opening the launcher, waiting for it to patch before opening. And then the Unknown Error slaps me again. Now I'm trying for the 3rd time, downloading everything again and I'm going to try and skip over Ambitions and see if the next one, Fast Lane Stuff, works.
Le Sigh:(. How many EPs do you have? I bought mine (Ambitions, Late Night, Generations, Seasons, University Life) on DVD so I don't even have to go through anything but the launcher at the beginning, and everything works perfectly. I know it might suck to buy the EPs again, but if you don't have too many that might actually be the best idea. EDIT: My friend (Windows though, but might be the same problem) installed my Sim games on her PC but couldn't get Generations installed for some reason; it wanted to patch before the actual installation. So what I did was I installed Seasons and THEN installed Generations and for some reason it was okay now? So maybe, as trivial as it sounds, try a different installation order?
